What Are Extreme Sports?

There are many types of extreme sports, including those of the land, air and sea and those suited for different weather seasons.

You may also hear people refer to extreme sports as adventure sports or action sports.

Whatever you prefer to call them, extreme sports, in general, accommodate all sports that are perceived to have a high-risk level, whether that be due to height, speed or specialist technique.

With the perceived high-risk association of extreme sports, the question is often raised as to why people participate in them.

It’s common to assume athletes participating in extreme sports are irresponsible or even suicidal (think free solo climbing or BASE jumping).

What we know is that unless you’ve experienced extreme sports yourself you can never truly understand the motivation behind it.

The motivation for extreme sports is different for everyone, however some commonalities include a connection with nature, the sought after adrenaline rush, creativity, focus and body/mind connection as well as the ability to express humility and fear which is hard to come by in everyday life.

Aside from this, there’s usually a strong international community bond within these sports which brings people together through shared locations, competitions and even film festivals.

Some of our favourite extreme sports include:
  • Skydiving
  • Mountaineering
  • Abseiling
  • Caving
  • Ice Climbing
  • BASE Jumping
  • White Water Rafting
  • Mountain Biking
